Protect yourself from a serious brain infection while travelling to parts of Europe and Asia.

What Is Tick-Borne Encephalitis?

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks, primarily found in forested or grassy rural areas of Europe and parts of Asia. In rare cases, TBE can also be contracted from unpasteurised dairy products from infected animals.

TBE can lead to severe neurological complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, and paralysis. While not every tick bite leads to infection, the risks increase significantly when travelling to high-risk areas during warmer months.

Symptoms of Tick-Borne Encephalitis

Symptoms typically develop 7–14 days after being bitten and may occur in two phases:

Phase 1:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea

Phase 2 (if it progresses):

  • High fever
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Seizures
  • Neurological complications (e.g., meningitis, encephalitis)

There is no specific antiviral treatment for TBE — only supportive care — which is why prevention through vaccination is so important.

Who Should Get the TBE Vaccine?

The vaccine is recommended for people who:

  • Are travelling to rural or forested areas of Central, Eastern, or Northern Europe or parts of Asia
  • Plan to hike, camp, or work outdoors in affected regions
  • Will be living or staying for a prolonged period in endemic areas
  • May consume unpasteurised dairy while abroad

At Blackpool Express Chemist, we offer same-day vaccination appointments for flexible, last-minute planning.
Our private TBE vaccinations are delivered by experienced pharmacists.

Areas Where TBE Is a Risk

Tick-borne encephalitis is found in:

  • Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and other Central European countries
  • The Baltics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania)
  • Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia)
  • Russia and parts of China
  • Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland)

Risk is highest in spring, summer, and early autumn.

How the Vaccine Works

The vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that protect against the TBE virus. It does not protect against Lyme disease, which is also spread by ticks, so it’s important to practice tick avoidance measures.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

The full course involves three doses:

  • First dose – Anytime before travel
  • Second dose – 1 to 3 months after the first
  • Third dose – 5 to 12 months after the second dose

If you’re short on time, an accelerated schedule may be possible — speak to our pharmacists. A booster is recommended every 3–5 years if you remain at risk.

How Long Does It Take to Become Effective?

Protection begins approximately 2 weeks after the second dose. For full long-term protection, all three doses are recommended.

Side Effects and Safety

The TBE vaccine is generally well-tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Redness or pain at the injection site
  • Mild fever or fatigue
  • Headache or muscle aches

Serious side effects are very rare. Always inform us of any allergies or medical conditions before receiving the vaccine.

Tick Prevention Tips (Alongside Vaccination)

While the vaccine protects against TBE, you should still reduce your exposure to tick bites:

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers in wooded or grassy areas
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET
  • Tuck trousers into socks when hiking
  • Check your body and clothing for ticks after being outdoors
  • Avoid raw milk or unpasteurised dairy products abroad
