Urinary tract infections (UTIs), commonly referred to as bladder infections or pee infections, can cause pain, discomfort, and a frequent urge to urinate. If left untreated, they can lead to more severe complications.

The NHS Pharmacy First Service at Blackpool Express Chemist provides quick and effective treatment for women aged 16 to 64, allowing you to get expert care without the need for a GP appointment.

No GP Appointment Required

Our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and, when necessary, provide antibiotics to treat the infection and relieve discomfort.

Symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

UTIs can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms, affecting both the bladder and the urinary tract. Common signs include:

  • Burning sensation or pain when urinating.
  • Frequent urge to urinate, often with little urine passing.
  • Cloudy, strong-smelling, or discoloured urine.
  • Abdominal pain or pressure, particularly around the lower stomach.
  • A feeling of bladder fullness, even after urinating.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, early treatment can help prevent the infection from worsening.

How Pharmacy First Can Help

At Blackpool Express Chemist, we provide quick access to UTI treatment with no need to visit a GP.

This service is available to women aged 16 to 64 who are experiencing uncomplicated urinary tract infections. If you have a mild to moderate UTI, our pharmacists can help determine whether treatment is required and provide the necessary medication.

  • Antibiotic Treatment – If our pharmacist determines that your UTI requires antibiotics, we can provide the appropriate prescription to clear the infection.
  • Pain Relief & Advice – We offer expert guidance on managing discomfort, as well as recommendations for over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Hydration & Aftercare Advice – We’ll guide you on staying hydrated and other lifestyle changes to prevent future UTIs.

How Do You Get a UTI? Is It Contagious?

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract, leading to infection. The most common cause is E. coli bacteria, which naturally exist in the digestive system but can travel to the urethra and bladder. Other causes include holding in urine for too long, dehydration, poor hygiene, and sexual activity.

UTIs are not contagious and cannot be passed from person to person, but certain activities, such as sexual intercourse, can increase the risk of developing an infection.

What Should I Know While Waiting for UTI Treatment?

If you suspect a UTI but are waiting for treatment, there are a few things you can do to help relieve symptoms and prevent the infection from worsening:

  • Drink plenty of water – This helps flush bacteria out of the urinary tract.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks – These can irritate the bladder.
  • Urinate frequently – Holding in urine can allow bacteria to multiply.
  • Use a heating pad on your lower abdomen – This can help reduce discomfort.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing – Tight-fitting clothes can trap moisture and create an environment for bacteria to thrive.

If symptoms worsen, you develop a fever, or you experience severe back pain, seek urgent medical attention.

Alan P

Excellent treatment. Professional and instructive. Only charged £10 because there was not a lot of wax in my ear. Very fair. Would recommend to anybody.

Mary F

Great service with kind and understanding staff even though I made a mistake with my appointment date and arrived a day earlier! They were prepared to see me at short notice. Brilliant advice throughout. Thank you!

Nick B

I had a couple of travel vaccines done, the man that did them was very polite, also didn’t take long at all. Would highly recommend this place.

Abi F

Very friendly. Great advice. Thank you

Chris W

I booked an appointment to have my left ear examined following a few days of a hearing impairment caused by deeply deposited ear-wax. It was thoroughly examined using cameras and sensors and I was advised to return a few days later after softening the hard wax with regular drops of olive oil. On my return Imran removed the blockage and my hearing is now fine. A great service, thanks.

Stuart C

Really pleased with the face to face interview. Felt really engaged and pleased with how everything was conducted.

Probably the best pharmacy I have ever been to in the UK. Showed up unannounced in quite some pain. They took care of me immediately!

Professional set up, great advice. Went for a consultation, didn’t actually need ears syringing and fully explained why. Well worth the £10 fee
