Recognising the Symptoms of Sinusitis

Sinusitis symptoms can range from mild congestion to severe pressure and pain.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blocked nose & congestion – Difficulty breathing through the nose.
  • Runny nose with nasal discharge – Mucus may be clear, yellow, or green.
  • Facial pain & sinus pressure – Often felt around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead.
  • Headache & ear pain – Caused by sinus inflammation.
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste – Due to nasal congestion.
  • Dizziness & fatigue – A result of sinus pressure.
  • Cough (especially at night) – Postnasal drip can cause a persistent cough.

If symptoms last more than 10 days or worsen, professional treatment is recommended.

  • Patients needing expert guidance on managing congestion, headaches, and sinus pain.

How Do You Get Sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses (air-filled spaces in the face) become inflamed or infected. It is usually caused by a viral infection, such as a cold or flu, but can also be triggered by bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants like smoke and pollution.

Viral Sinusitis (Most Common) – Not directly contagious, but the viruses that cause it (such as colds and flu) can spread easily through coughing, sneezing, or touching contaminated surfaces.

Bacterial Sinusitis (Less Common) – Not contagious, but occurs when bacteria cause prolonged infection in the sinuses.

Allergy-Related Sinusitis – Not contagious and is triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander.

If your sinusitis was caused by a cold or flu virus, you may still be contagious in the first few days while the viral infection is active.

What Should I Know While Waiting for Sinusitis Treatment?

If you’re experiencing sinus pain, congestion, or pressure, here are some tips to manage symptoms and promote faster recovery while waiting for treatment:

  • Stay Hydrated – Drinking plenty of fluids helps thin mucus and improves drainage.
  • Use a Saline Rinse or Steam Inhalation – This can clear nasal passages and reduce inflammation.
  • Rest & Avoid Stress – Getting enough sleep allows your body to fight infection.
  • Apply a Warm Compress – Placing a warm cloth over your sinuses, forehead, or nose can ease pressure and pain.
  • Use Over-the-Counter Pain Relief – Paracetamol or ibuprofen can reduce headaches and facial pain.
  • Avoid Strong Scents & Smoke – Irritants like perfumes, pollution, and cigarette smoke can worsen sinus inflammation.
  • Keep Your Head Elevated When Lying Down – This can help with sinus drainage and prevent congestion from worsening.

If symptoms last more than 10 days, worsen, or include a high fever, visit Blackpool Express Chemist or see your GP for further assessment.

Happy Customers

Alan P

Excellent treatment. Professional and instructive. Only charged £10 because there was not a lot of wax in my ear. Very fair. Would recommend to anybody.

Mary F

Great service with kind and understanding staff even though I made a mistake with my appointment date and arrived a day earlier! They were prepared to see me at short notice. Brilliant advice throughout. Thank you!

Nick B

I had a couple of travel vaccines done, the man that did them was very polite, also didn’t take long at all. Would highly recommend this place.

Abi F

Very friendly. Great advice. Thank you

Chris W

I booked an appointment to have my left ear examined following a few days of a hearing impairment caused by deeply deposited ear-wax. It was thoroughly examined using cameras and sensors and I was advised to return a few days later after softening the hard wax with regular drops of olive oil. On my return Imran removed the blockage and my hearing is now fine. A great service, thanks.

Stuart C

Really pleased with the face to face interview. Felt really engaged and pleased with how everything was conducted.

Probably the best pharmacy I have ever been to in the UK. Showed up unannounced in quite some pain. They took care of me immediately!

Professional set up, great advice. Went for a consultation, didn’t actually need ears syringing and fully explained why. Well worth the £10 fee
