What is Yellow Fever?

- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Destinations Where Yellow Fever Vaccination May Be Recommended:
- Sub-Saharan Africa – including countries such as Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- South America - especially Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela.
- Central America - parts of Panama and bordering jungle regions.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Doses & Timing:
Our yellow fever vaccine is given as a single injection, usually administered into the upper arm. One dose provides lifelong protection for most individuals, and revaccination is generally not required.
You must receive the vaccine at least 10 days before travelling to a country where yellow fever vaccination is a requirement. This 10-day period allows your body to build sufficient immunity and ensures your certificate is considered valid for entry.
If you have less than 10 days before travel and have not yet been vaccinated, contact us at Blackpool Express Chemist as soon as possible. Our travel health team will advise you on your options.

Potential Side Effects:
The yellow fever vaccine is generally safe and well-tolerated, but like all vaccines, it can cause some side effects. These are usually mild and short-lived.
Common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Muscle pain
- A mild fever
- Soreness or redness at the injection site
Serious side effects are very rare, but if you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, a high fever, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek medical advice immediately.
Although side effects are possible, the risk of contracting yellow fever is far more serious, particularly if you’re travelling to high-risk areas. Vaccination remains the most effective protection.
Additional Tips
Alongside vaccination, it’s important to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Use insect repellent and wear protective clothing, especially during peak mosquito activity in the early morning and late afternoon.
If you do contract yellow fever, most cases are mild and clear up on their own within a few days. You can take painkillers such as paracetamol to help relieve symptoms like fever and muscle pain. Make sure to rest and stay well hydrated throughout your recovery.
