Is Ear Wax Affecting Your Daily Life?

Many people don’t realise that their symptoms are caused by ear wax until they experience relief after removal. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, ear wax buildup could be the cause:

Muffled or reduced hearing

Feeling of Blockage or Fullness

Ear Discomfort or Mild Pain

Ringing in the Ears (Tinnitus)

Itchy Ears

Why Microsuction is the Gold Standard for Ear Wax Removal

"Microsuction is widely regarded as the safest, most effective method of ear wax removal by audiologists and ENT specialists worldwide."

At our clinic, we use microsuction technology, performed by trained and accredited professionals.

Unlike traditional syringing, which uses water, microsuction ear wax removal is a dry, precise, and painless procedure, making it the preferred choice of audiologists and healthcare professionals.

  • Pain-Free & Quick: The procedure itself takes just 5-10 minutes.
  • Safe & Effective: Suitable for all ages, including those with perforated eardrums or hearing aids.

To make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible, we recommend using olive oil drops before your appointment. Use medicated olive oil drops once per day in the affected ear for three days before your consultation.

When to Speak to a Hearing Expert Before Booking

Please contact us before your appointment if any of the following apply, as we may not be able to proceed with wax removal:

  • Dry, tickly, or irritable throat
  • Poor head and neck control
  • Diabetes
  • Currently taking blood-thinning medication
  • High or low blood pressure

Frequently Asked Questions

Our team will always provide you with advice before you attend your appointment. Whilst this advice is always individual dependent, generally this advice will include the use of earwax softening drops, such as olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops four times a day for 3-5 days before you attend.

There is no need to use cotton wool inside the ears and always inform the team when booking about any medications which you take before you attend.

Ear syringing is the use of pressurised water inside the ear to dislodge and remove ear wax. Traditionally, this was the method used to remove earwax. This method can be very messy and uncomfortable, often painful. There is a greater chance of getting a perforated ear drum when performing this method or an infection.

Microsuction is the use of a small suction tube inside the ear to extract the ear wax. This method is considered the gold standard. It is a generally pain-free, mess-free, effective and a comfortable method of earwax removal.

Simply put- NO! Remember if the object is larger than your elbow- it should not be inserted into the ear

It is a common misconception that we can remove earwax using objects such as cotton buds or other tools inside the ear. This is both dangerous and most likely counterproductive. In actual fact attempting to clean the ears yourself can actually compact the earwax deeper into the ear causing further complications. It is strongly advised to avoid this.

Ultimately, the only way to truly diagnose earwax buildup is for a qualified professional to examine your ear using an otoscope. Some of the symptoms of earwax buildup include:

  • Pain in the ear
  • Hearing loss in the affected ear
  • Tinnitus- a ringing sensation in the ear
  • Itchiness in and around the ear
  • A sensation of fullness inside the ear
  • Vertigo- a sensation of feeling dizzy, disorientated and sickness
  • Discharge from the affected ear
  • Odors from the affected ear

If you suspect you have earwax buildup speak to our professionals at Blackpool Express Chemist who can arrange a same-day consultation for you. Here they will share photographs from the otoscope with you to discuss and build a treatment plan.

Ear wax is a natural and essential substance that helps protect the ear canal. In most cases, it gradually moves out of the ear on its own, keeping the ears self-cleaning. However, for some people, ear wax can build up excessively, leading to blockages and discomfort.

Common Causes of Ear Wax Buildup:

  • Overproduction of Ear Wax – Some individuals naturally produce more ear wax than others, increasing the likelihood of buildup.
  • Hard or Dry Ear Wax – Wax that is drier and harder than usual may struggle to exit the ear naturally.
  • Narrow or Hairy Ear Canals – These can trap wax, preventing it from working its way out.
  • Age-Related Changes – As we age, ear wax tends to become drier, making buildup more common in older adults.
  • Use of Objects in the Ear – Frequent use of hearing aids, earplugs, or cotton buds can push wax deeper into the ear, causing blockages.

If you experience hearing loss, discomfort, or a blocked sensation, professional ear wax removal can help restore your ear health.

Normal ears contain ear wax. This is a substance created by the lining of the ear canal. Ear wax plays a crucial role in protecting the ear canal from infection-causing microorganisms, dirt and other irritants which can be harmful to the ear.  Ear wax also plays a pivotal role in keeping the ear canal well-lubricated.
